What Ann Arbor Bathrooms Usually Need
Ann Arbor homes range from pre-1940 houses to 1960s and 1970s neighborhoods and newer condos. A bit more than 4 in 10 homes are detached houses, and many bathrooms still have their original tub and tile.
Census estimates put the median year built for an Ann Arbor home at 1971, older than the Washtenaw County figure of 1978. About 15% of homes went up before 1940, 10% in the 1950s, 19% in the 1960s, and 15% in the 1970s. About 42% are detached single-family houses, 12% are attached condos and townhomes, and about 45% are owner-occupied.
In homes this age we often find steel tubs, tile set over wire mesh with tile wainscoting, plastic or acrylic wall panels, and basement bathrooms on a cement slab. In their place go walk-in showers, new tubs, and grout-free Pro Stone cultured marble walls. For planning numbers, see typical bathroom remodeling costs.
