Tub and Tiled Stall Out, a Low-Threshold Shower With a Glass Screen In

This Auburn Hills bathroom had a drop-in jetted tub under the window and a separate tiled shower stall. Cameron and Dominic took both out and built one long walk-in shower where the tub was. The base sits low in the floor for an easy step in, and a fixed glass screen keeps the water in, with no door at all.

The Job

A Tub and a Stall, Made Into One Shower

This main-floor bathroom in Auburn Hills had a drop-in jetted tub under the window and a separate shower stall with framed glass doors in the corner. The floor was tile.

Both came out: the tub and its tile surround, the tiled stall and its base, the tile floor, the vanity, the toilet, the old mirror, and the light. The drywall stayed.

The new shower went into the tub’s spot, under the window. Cameron and Dominic set the new base down into the floor, so the step in is low, and moved the plumbing to the new spot from the basement below.

The base is Pure Biscuit Pro Stone, about 82 inches long, with smooth Biscuit Pro Stone walls and Pro Stone trim around the window. In place of a door, one fixed panel of heavy glass works as a screen to keep the water in, so there is nothing to slide or swing.

Inside are a corner caddy, a recessed soap box, a corner seat, and two brushed nickel grab bars. A fixed shower head and a handheld on a slide bar are brushed nickel too.

Where the old stall stood, two tall Sable linen cabinets now stand side by side. A 42-inch Sable vanity with drawers and doors, smaller than the old one, has a Pro Stone top. A comfort-height toilet and a new wood-look vinyl floor over new subfloor finish the room.

Cameron and Dominic did the installation in 11 working days. Kevin was the product specialist. The homeowner supplied the vanity light, the round mirror, and the cabinet handles and knobs, and painted the room after we finished. This is one Home Pro USA project in Auburn Hills. Questions About This Remodel

How long did this bathroom remodel take?
Eleven working days. Cameron and Dominic took out the tub, the tiled stall, the floor, and the vanity, set the new shower base low into the floor, and then put in the walls, glass, vanity, toilet, and floor.
What is a low-threshold shower?
It is a shower with a small step at the entry. We set this Pro Stone base down into the floor, so there is no tub wall or tall curb to step over. That makes walking in easier.
What is a shower screen?
It is one fixed panel of heavy glass instead of a door. It keeps the water in, and the open side lets you walk straight in. With no door to slide or swing, there is no track to clean.
Can a shower go where the tub was?
Yes. In this bath the new shower took the spot of the old drop-in tub, under the window. We moved the plumbing to fit and trimmed the window in Pro Stone so it can handle the water.
Is this kind of shower good for aging in place?
Yes. A low step in, two grab bars, a corner seat, and a handheld shower on a slide bar make it easier to use. The open side means there is no door to work around.
Do you work in Auburn Hills?
Yes. See our Oakland County page, our Rochester Hills page, and our Lake Orion story nearby. We work all across Oakland County, and every estimate is clear and written.
