The Job

The Primary Bath, Start to Finish

This primary bathroom in Shelby Township has a cathedral ceiling with a skylight, a corner jetted tub, and two vanity areas. The homeowners wanted a bigger shower that was easier to keep clean, and a room that looked new, while keeping the tub.

Before the work, the shower was a small tiled stall with a sliding glass door, set into an alcove under a soffit. White tile covered the tub deck and most of the floor, and the two vanities were older wood cabinets.

The tiled shower came out along with its soffit and back wall, plus the floor tile and carpet, both vanities and their tops, the vanity mirrors, and the tile backsplashes at each side of the tub. The toilet came up for the new floor and went back in, and the large mirror over the tub stayed.

We made the shower 6 inches bigger and built a short pony wall beside the toilet, capped in Almond Bone. The 54-by-36-inch base, the walls, a wave seat, two corner shelves, and a recessed shampoo niche are all Almond Bone Pro Stone, a warm off-white with soft gray and tan veining. A new LED light sits in the ceiling over the shower.

Clear 3/8-inch heavy glass closes in the shower: a hinged door, a fixed panel, and a short return panel that stands on the pony wall. The hinges, handle, and handheld shower are brushed nickel.

The corner jetted tub stayed. We covered its tile deck front and surround in the same Almond Bone Pro Stone, so the tub now matches the shower.

Both vanity areas got new maple cabinets in a dark Sable finish with Almond Bone tops and built-in bowls. One top runs almost 9 feet and the other just over 6 feet, each with a brushed nickel widespread faucet.

A 6-by-48-inch vinyl plank floor in a light gray-beige wood look now runs through the room, about 245 square feet in all, with new baseboard and thresholds.

Dan led the installation, with help from Mike on a few days, and the work took 13 working days. Kevin was the product specialist. See more of our Shelby Township work on the Shelby Township page.

The shower, the tub facing, and the vanity tops carry the Manufacturer’s Limited Lifetime Warranty, and our own workmanship guarantee covers the installation.

Project FAQs

Questions About This Remodel

How long did this primary bath remodel take?
Thirteen working days, with Dan leading and Mike helping. The tiled shower, soffit, floor, and both vanities came out, the pony wall went up, the base and walls went in, the tub was refaced, then the glass, vanities, and floor.
Can you make an existing shower bigger?
Often, yes. Here we took out the soffit and back wall of the old stall and gained 6 inches, then built a short pony wall beside the toilet so the new 54-by-36-inch shower could sit in the same corner.
Can a Roman tub be updated without replacing it?
Yes. This jetted corner tub stayed in place. We covered the old tile on its deck front and surround with Almond Bone Pro Stone, so the tub matches the new shower without tearing out the deck.
What does Almond Bone Pro Stone look like?
Almond Bone is a warm off-white with soft gray and tan veining. Here it covers the shower base, walls, seat, shelves, niche, and pony wall cap, plus the tub facing and both vanity tops, so everything matches.
Why heavy glass on a pony wall?
The 3/8-inch clear glass has no bottom track to scrub, and it lets the skylight brighten the whole shower. A short return panel stands on the pony wall, so the shower feels open while the water stays in.
