Bathroom Enlarged: A Small Tiled Stall Out, a 60-Inch Subway Shower In

This upstairs bath in Huntington Woods was small, with a tiled shower stall under a sloped ceiling. Adam and Dave took it down to the studs and made the room bigger by taking space from the bedroom next door. Now a 60-inch shower with Italian White Pro Stone walls in a subway pattern fits, along with a new vanity, toilet, and floor.

The Job

An Upstairs Bath, Made Bigger

This upstairs bath in Huntington Woods sits under a sloped ceiling. It was a small room with a small tiled shower stall, framed glass doors, a mosaic tile floor, and tile on the lower walls.

The whole room came out, down to the studs and the floor boards. That meant the old stall, all the tile, the floor, the vanity, and the toilet.

Then we made the bathroom bigger by taking space from the bedroom next door. Adam and Dave framed a new wall into that bedroom, which made room for a 60-inch shower and a 60-inch vanity.

A bigger room meant more work behind the walls than most baths need. The electrical was reworked for the new layout, the plumbing was moved to fit the new shower and vanity, and new drywall went up on every wall and the sloped ceiling.

The new shower is 60 inches wide, on a custom Italian White Pro Stone base with a matching one-piece curb. Italian White Pro Stone walls in a subway pattern line the shower, and a panel follows the slope of the ceiling.

An Italian White corner shelf and cove molding match the walls. Clear sliding glass doors close it in, and the shower head and valve are brushed nickel.

A 60-inch maple vanity has drawers on both sides and doors in the middle. Its Italian White Pro Stone top has an undermount rectangular bowl, a backsplash, and side splashes.

A new one-piece toilet and a new floor finish the room.

Adam and Dave did the installation in 9 working days. Larry was the product specialist. The homeowner painted the room after we finished. This is one Home Pro USA project in Huntington Woods. See more on our Oakland County page.

Project FAQs

Questions About This Remodel

How long did this upstairs bath remodel take?
Nine working days. Adam and Dave took the room down to the studs, took space from the bedroom next door, and hung new drywall. Then the shower, the vanity, the toilet, and the new floor went in.
Can you make a small bathroom bigger?
Often, yes. Here we took space from the bedroom next door, which made room for a 60-inch shower and a 60-inch vanity. Moving a wall also means updating the electrical and moving the plumbing, and we handle it all.
Can a shower go under a sloped ceiling?
Yes. In this bath the shower sits under the slope, and a Pro Stone panel follows the angle above the walls. The walls and the sloped panel match, with no tile or grout lines anywhere inside the shower.
What is a subway pattern Pro Stone wall?
Pro Stone is our cultured marble. The subway pattern is molded into each panel to look like stacked tile, but it is a smooth sheet with no grout lines to scrub. This shower uses Italian White, a soft white.
How big is the new shower?
The base is 60 inches long, much roomier than the old tiled stall. It is a custom Italian White Pro Stone base with a one-piece curb, behind clear sliding glass doors. A 60-inch maple vanity sits across the room.
